What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are Google's generated summaries, shown above the traditional results. Google composes a short answer from several web pages and links to a handful of them. They occupy the position that used to belong to the first organic result, and they reduce clicks to every page below.

How do AI Overviews work?

When a query triggers one, Google selects a set of pages from its index, passes them to a language model, and asks for a summary that answers the question. The result appears as a short block of prose or bullets with links to several of the pages it drew from.

The important detail is that the summary is generated at query time from retrieved pages rather than recalled from training. That means a page can appear in an Overview within days of publishing, and it means the content of the Overview changes as the underlying pages change.

Not every query gets one. Google is more likely to generate an Overview for informational questions with a settled answer, and less likely for navigational queries, transactional queries, and topics where accuracy is sensitive.

What do AI Overviews do to click-through rates?

They reduce them, and the reduction is concentrated on informational queries.

The mechanism is straightforward. The Overview answers the question in the results page, so the reader has less reason to open anything. Position one is pushed down the page, and on a phone it may be below the fold entirely. Studies of the effect vary widely by query type and industry, and the honest summary is that informational content has lost a meaningful share of its clicks while transactional and branded queries are far less affected.

The strategic consequence: content written purely to capture informational traffic has become a weaker investment, and content written to establish what a company is, so that it gets cited and remembered, has become a stronger one.

How does a page get included in an AI Overview?

Ranking well remains the entry ticket. Google draws Overview sources from pages it already rates highly for the query, so conventional search engine optimisation is a prerequisite rather than an alternative.

Beyond that, the pages that get pulled in tend to answer the question directly and early, use clear headings that match how the question is asked, state facts plainly enough to be lifted as a sentence, and cover the specific question rather than circling a broad topic. Structured data helps the system understand what the page is about, though it is not itself a ticket to inclusion.

Can a company opt out of AI Overviews?

Only bluntly. The nosnippet and max-snippet robots directives limit what Google may display from a page, which does reduce Overview eligibility, but the same directives also strip normal search snippets. Google-Extended, the control for Gemini training, does not govern Overviews.

For most companies opting out is the wrong trade. Losing snippet display to avoid being summarised means losing visibility in both places at once.

How AI Overviews are used in marketing

Production. Question-shaped pages with the answer at the top, written to be excerpted rather than to hold a reader for four minutes.

Analysis. Tracking which queries in a category trigger an Overview, whose pages are cited, and how organic click-through has moved on the affected terms. Search Console shows the click loss but not the cause, so the two need reading together.

Distribution. Because Overviews cite a handful of sources, being one of the pages Google already trusts for the query matters more than publishing another adjacent article.

How this impacts your business

A language model does not look a company up in a register. It composes a description from everything it read during training and whatever it retrieves at the moment of the question. Trade press, directories, forums, competitor comparison pages, and somewhere in that mix the company's own website too.

So the description a buyer sees is assembled, not published. No company controls it, but every company supplies a share of the material it is built from.

The traffic impact is still small, roughly one percent of sessions for most companies. The influence is not small, because the reader is often a buyer forming a first impression of what a company does and who it serves, before any page gets a click.

Checking takes ten seconds. Type the company name into ChatGPT and read the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI Overviews the same as featured snippets?
No. A featured snippet lifts a passage verbatim from one page. An AI Overview generates new text summarising several pages, and the wording appears nowhere in the sources.

Do AI Overviews appear for every search?
No. They are most common on informational questions and much rarer on navigational, transactional and sensitive queries.

Does appearing in an AI Overview send traffic?
Some, from the source links, but far less than ranking first used to. The value is closer to being quoted than to being clicked.

How can I tell if my pages appear in AI Overviews?
Search the queries that matter and look. Search Console does not report Overview appearances separately, so third-party rank trackers that flag Overview presence are the practical option.

Is SGE the same thing?
Yes. Search Generative Experience was the experimental name; AI Overviews is the shipped product.
