What is Promptwatch?
Promptwatch is an AI search visibility tool that helps you measure and improve visibility across generative answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity, and AI search functionality in Google (AI Overviews and Google AI Mode).
Promptwatch initially stood out with unique crawler log analysis features. Today, it has full fledged capabilities of an AI search visibility solution focused on measuring brand mentions and citations across websites and third party sources such as Youtube and Reddit.
Founded in 2025 by Gijs de Groot and Klaas Foppen, Promptwatch is based out of Amsterdam. In September 2025 they raised a $1.2M seed round led by Arches Capital.

What are the key features of Promptwatch?
Monitors
Promptwatch lets you organize tracked prompts and projects within "Monitors" - a way to configure tracking within one geography or campaign setting. Monitors can be configured also for types of prompts, for example, separating top-of-funnel terms from bottom-of-funnel terms. Within Monitors you'll get details of both brand mention visibility and citations, with more detailed reports available for competitors and potential gaps in citation coverage.
Sources
Promptwatch gives you separate reporting on Sources, focused on showing which individual website domains, website pages, Youtube videos and/or Reddit threads influence the prompts you are tracking. The Sources tab can be considered your "outside-in" reference for off-page SEO, digital PR outreach and even creation of user generated content across Reddit and Youtube.
Analytics
The third core focus area of Promptwatch is Analytics, where you can configure separate ways to track website LLM visits either through including a snippet of code to your website, integrating Google Search Console, or tracking server event logs.
Content
Currently Promptwatch gives some basic ways to optimize your on-page content for LLM visibility. At the time of testing, this was not at the level of market-leading solutions like Writesonic or Surfer SEO, but they could be sufficient as an entry point for an in-house marketing team. I would not recommend using this functionality without heavily reviewing and editing the content for originality and tone of voice. IMHO this is not an essential aspect of AI search visibility tools, and I would not expect this to be developed greatly in the future.
Research
The newest feature of Promptwatch is Research - an area where you can get inspiration for prompts or prompt topics to explore. You can either get inspiration based on websites, keywords, or fan-out prompts based on your account settings.
How I tested Promptwatch
This review is based on a hands-on evaluation of Promptwatch between November and early December, 2025. I spent about 5 hours in total in Promptwatch to get a detailed view of functionality and comparative features.
Can Promptwatch provide accurate AI-engine visibility?
-
Does Promptwatch provide multi-AI engine visibility?
Yes. You can track most common AI answer engines and easily configure the tool based on your needs. The key cap is how many prompts you track on a monthly basis.
-
Does Promptwatch offer a good user experience?
Yes. The Promptwatch user experience is less flashy than other tools compared (Scrunch AI and Profound), but in day-to-day testing it was easy to use, simple to configure and reliable.
-
Does Promptwatch give good value for money?
Currently Promptwatch gives among the best ROI of AI search visibility tools. In testing across B2B services, tech and SaaS companies, I've found that the suggested "Essential" package is sufficient to get started with. For agencies, the ability to pay (and expand) as you go is preferable to pre-paid bundles.
-
Does Promptwatch give accurate and trustworthy data?
Almost always yes. The only persistent bug I found related to the way the "Optimize Content" feature links to a website domain sitemap. Otherwise the core dashboards and reports functioned as expected during the testing phase.
-
Does Promptwatch offer actionable insights beyond just data?
Yes. Promptwatch gives a pretty bare-essentials way of showing very actionable data. For an SEO professional, it gives you exactly what you need, sometimes with little explanation of how to interpret data. The key example of this is the "Answer Gap" report, which may be difficult for non-SEO professionals to read, but is a perfectly concise summary for actually interpreting what you should be doing when you manage multiple domains and accounts.
How does Promptwatch work?
Prompt-level tracking with daily refreshes
Unlike many AI visibility tools that rely on keyword-based monitoring, Promptwatch is built around actual prompts - the real questions users ask AI engines. You configure specific prompts within Monitors, and the platform tracks how AI engines respond to those exact queries on a daily basis. This approach more accurately reflects real AI search behavior, since it captures how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and other platforms actually answer user questions rather than abstracting them into keywords.
The daily refresh cycle is a significant differentiator. While some competing tools update monthly or weekly, Promptwatch checks your tracked prompts every day, giving you much faster visibility into changes in AI engine responses. This matters especially when you're running active PR campaigns, publishing new content, or responding to competitive moves in your category.
Brand mention tracking and citation analysis
At the core of Promptwatch's methodology is tracking brand mentions and citations. The platform doesn't just tell you whether you appear in AI responses - it shows you exactly how you're cited, which sources the AI engines reference when mentioning your brand, and how your visibility compares across different AI platforms.
This citation-level tracking extends beyond just your own website. Promptwatch identifies when AI engines cite your brand through third-party sources like news articles, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, and industry publications. This is crucial intelligence because, as Generate More's research shows, 96% of AI citations come from PR-driven content rather than traditional SEO-optimized pages.
Monitor-based organization for strategic segmentation
The Monitor structure gives you exceptional flexibility in organizing your tracking. You can create separate Monitors for different geographies, campaign types, funnel stages, or product lines. For example, a B2B SaaS company might create:
- A Monitor for top-of-funnel category queries
- A Monitor for middle-funnel comparison and evaluation prompts
- A Monitor for bottom-funnel branded searches
- Separate Monitors for different geographic markets with localized prompts
Each Monitor operates independently with its own budget allocation, allowing you to control costs by capping the number of prompts tracked per Monitor. This granular control is particularly valuable for agencies managing multiple clients or large enterprises with diverse product portfolios.
Answer Gap analysis for competitive intelligence
One of Promptwatch's most powerful features is Answer Gap analysis. This functionality identifies prompts where competitors are visible but you're not, or where you're missing citations despite having relevant content. The Answer Gap report essentially tells you: "Here's where you should be appearing but aren't, and here's what you need to do about it."
For experienced SEO professionals, this report is gold. It's not hand-holding with overly simplified recommendations - instead, it gives you the raw intelligence you need to make strategic decisions about content creation, PR outreach, or citation-building campaigns. The downside is that less experienced marketers may find this report cryptic without additional context or guidance.
Multi-channel citation source tracking
The Sources tab gives you comprehensive visibility into which domains, pages, videos, and threads influence AI responses for your tracked prompts. This goes beyond simple domain-level analysis - you can see specific YouTube videos, individual Reddit threads, and exact webpage URLs that AI engines are citing.
This source-level intelligence transforms how you approach off-page SEO and digital PR. Instead of guessing which publications or platforms matter for AI visibility, you get empirical data showing exactly where citations originate. This allows you to:
- Prioritize PR outreach to publications that AI engines actually cite
- Identify Reddit communities or YouTube channels where participation could increase visibility
- Discover citation opportunities and content collaboration partners you hadn't considered
- Track whether your PR campaigns are generating AI-visible citations
Multi-modal AI traffic attribution
Promptwatch offers three distinct methods for tracking AI-driven traffic to your website:
- Code snippet implementation: Add a JavaScript snippet to your site to track LLM referral visits
- Google Search Console integration: Connect GSC to attribute traffic from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
- Server log analysis: Parse server event logs to identify LLM crawler activity and referral patterns
This multi-modal approach gives you flexibility to choose the attribution method that fits your technical setup and privacy requirements. The server log analysis is particularly sophisticated - it's how Promptwatch originally differentiated itself before expanding into full AI visibility tracking.
The combination of these three methods provides the most comprehensive picture of AI-driven traffic available in any tool we've tested. You're not just seeing which prompts generate visibility - you're tracking the actual business impact through traffic, engagement, and conversion metrics.
How much does Promptwatch cost?
Promptwatch positions itself in the mid-tier pricing range for AI visibility tools - more expensive than bare-bones trackers like LLMrefs, but significantly more affordable than enterprise solutions like SEMRush or Scrunch AI.

Less expensive than:
- SEMRush AI-powered SEO features ($250+/month)
- Scrunch AI ($299/month starting)
- Profound AI ($199-499/month range)
- Writesonic's Botsonic AI search solution ($249+/month)
More expensive than:

What is my conclusion on Promptwatch for AI visibility?
After testing 15+ AI search visibility solutions over six months, Promptwatch emerged as our top overall pick for SaaS, B2B services and SEO agencies serious about AI search optimization.
Why Promptwatch wins
1. It's built for SEO professionals, not simplified for novices
Promptwatch doesn't over-explain or dumb down its interface. The Answer Gap report, Source tracking, and Monitor configuration assume you understand AI visibility strategy. For experienced practitioners, this is refreshing - you get the data you need without unnecessary hand-holding.
2. Prompt-based tracking matches how AI engines actually work
Unlike keyword-based tools that abstract user behavior, Promptwatch tracks real prompts across real AI engines. This methodological precision means the data you're analyzing reflects actual AI search experiences, not approximations.
3. Daily updates enable responsive strategy
The 24-hour refresh cycle allows you to see the impact of competitive moves almost in real-time. This responsiveness transforms AI visibility from passive monitoring to active strategy.
4. Multi-modal attribution closes the loop
Most AI visibility tools tell you whether you're visible. Promptwatch tells you whether that visibility drives traffic, engagement, and business outcomes. The combination of code snippet, GSC integration, and server log analysis provides attribution most competitors can't match.
5. Monitor structure enables strategic segmentation
The ability to organize prompts into unlimited Monitors means you can structure tracking around your actual business - by funnel stage, geography, product line, or campaign. This organizational flexibility becomes increasingly valuable as your AI visibility strategy matures.
6. Value proposition is currently unmatched at $89-199/month
For what you get - daily tracking, multiple AI engines, comprehensive attribution, source-level intelligence, and Answer Gap analysis - the pricing represents exceptional ROI compared to alternatives.
Where Promptwatch falls short
1. Learning curve for less experienced marketers
If you're new to AI search optimization, Promptwatch's bare-essentials interface may feel cryptic. The Answer Gap report in particular requires SEO expertise to interpret properly. The Promptwatch Academy exists but could offer more prescriptive guidance.
2. Competitor diagnosis could be deeper
While the heatmap shows where competitors dominate, it doesn't always reveal why. Understanding the sources, content patterns, or citation strategies driving competitor visibility requires manual cross-referencing.
3. Content creation features are underwhelming
The on-page optimization and content generation capabilities lag behind specialized tools like Writesonic or Surfer SEO. These features feel tacked-on rather than core to the product vision.
4. Agency workflows need refinement
Multi-client management and email address limitations create friction for agencies. The product works well for managing your own business but hasn't fully optimized for agency use cases.
5. Best practice sharing could be more proactive
Advanced features like Answer Gaps and Source tracking are powerful but can be missed by new users. More in-app guidance or progressive disclosure could help users discover and leverage these capabilities.
How Promptwatch compares to alternatives
vs. LLMrefs ($79/month): Promptwatch costs $10/month more but delivers exponentially more value. Where LLMrefs offers keyword-based monthly snapshots, Promptwatch provides prompt-based daily tracking with attribution. Worth every penny of the premium.
vs. Scrunch AI ($299/month): Scrunch offers a flashier interface and more prescriptive recommendations. Promptwatch gives you better data flexibility, Monitor organization, and daily updates at a much lower cost. For experienced practitioners, Promptwatch is the clear winner.
vs. Profound AI ($199-499/month): Profound excels at content optimization and prescriptive guidance for enterprise and ecommerce websites. Promptwatch matches or exceeds Profound on core visibility tracking, attribution, and value-for-money for SaaS, Tech and B2B services. Choose Profound if you need heavy content direction for very large websites; choose Promptwatch if you need better visibility intelligence for strategic AEO growth.
vs. SEMRush AI features ($250+/month): SEMRush offers the brand recognition and established ecosystem. Promptwatch delivers better AI-specific functionality, especially for source tracking and Answer Gaps. If AI visibility is a primary focus (not an add-on to traditional SEO), Promptwatch is superior.
My final recommendation
Rating: 4.4/5
Promptwatch is the AI visibility tool I recommend to most clients, colleagues, and B2B businesses asking where to invest their AI SEO budget. It's not perfect - the learning curve, agency features, and competitor diagnosis have room for improvement - but it delivers the best combination of data quality, actionable intelligence, and value in the market.
Best for:
- B2B SaaS companies establishing AI search presence
- Digital agencies managing AI visibility for multiple clients
- SEO professionals who need data, not just dashboards
- Marketing teams tracking the impact of PR and content on AI citations
- Startups building AI-first go-to-market strategies
Not ideal for:
- Complete beginners to AI search who need extensive guidance
- Enterprises requiring hundreds of prompts tracked across dozens of products
- Teams prioritizing flashy interfaces over data substance
- Businesses expecting robust content creation built into the visibility tool
The bottom line
In a rapidly evolving market where most AI visibility tools are either too simplistic (keyword-based citation trackers) or too expensive (enterprise solutions), Promptwatch occupies the strategic middle ground. It gives sophisticated users the data they need to make real strategic decisions about AI search optimization without enterprise complexity or pricing.
Six months into testing AI visibility tools, Promptwatch is the one I'm rolling out across my customer base. That's the ultimate recommendation for 2026.
